Description

A Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated saucer dish late Kangxi c.1710-22, the fluted sides descending to a flat well, enamelled in Holland with a Kakiemon design of an exuberant tiger bounding towards two birds perched in flowering prunus above a banded hedge and rockwork, 23cm.

Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 608. Purchased from Christie's, South Kensington, 19th June 1997, lot 446.

While the decoration on this dish is more or less a direct copy of a Japanese design, the flying insects appear an unusual addition and may derive either from Chinese famille verte decoration, or perhaps from the new Meissen porcelain of the same period.
