Description

A Chinese porcelain English-decorated bowl six character Chenghua mark but Kangxi, originally decorated in underglaze blue with chrysanthemum and peony issuing from holey rockwork, later-enamelled in red, green and black with a long-tailed tiger treading on green leaves, the existing decoration highlighted with red flower sprays, 11.5cm.
Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 919. Purchased from R & G McPherson, March 2008.
Illustrated: ECC Transactions, Vol. 23, Helen Espir, London Decoration on Chinese Porcelain, p.33.
The use of simple red, green and black enamels was also seen on over-decorated Dehua porcelains in the early part of the 18th century (see lot 400) and was inspired by the Japanese. The somewhat ungainly tiger on this bowl is likely to have been copied from a Kakiemon design.
