Description

A Chinese porcelain European-decorated teapot and cover and matching coffee cup c.1730, later-enamelled en grisaille with two curiously-shaped panels containing figures in boats in a pagoda landscape, reserved on a ground of black swirls highlighted with red enamel flowerheads, a teabowl and saucer with underglaze blue decoration of a pagoda on a small island, with later additions in black and gilt of two figures in a boat and a Chinese figure flying a kite, within a continuous grapevine border, and a bowl with black and gilt panels edged in red on the original design of blue flowering stems, 17.5cm max. (6)
Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, nos. 353, 838, 833, 920 and 924. The teabowl previously in the Watney Collection.
Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.219, pl.19.
A Chinese dish enamelled with the Arms of Grand-George with a border of black spirals derived from famille rose porcelain, red trellis and opaque white blossoms, c.1735, provided convincing evidence that the decoration was English and not Dutch as previously thought. See ECC Transactions, Vol. 19, Part I, Errol Manners, The English Decoration of Oriental Porcelain, p.14, pls. 34a and b.
