Description

A blanc de Chine English-decorated libation cup 2nd half 17th century, the flared lobed form modelled as a magnolia flower with leaves and buds to the exterior, later-enamelled probably in London with an allover turquoise glaze, 9.1cm across.
Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 902. Purchased from R & G McPherson, April 2006.
Illustrated: ECC Transactions, Vol. 23, Helen Espir, London Decoration on Chinese Porcelain, p.36, pl.12a.
The thick monochrome glaze was presumably intended to mimic the similarly decorated pieces being produced in China. The unusual colour can be seen on salt-glazed stoneware and is also similar to decoration on Limehouse porcelain, suggesting a London origin.
