Description
A Chinese porcelain plate Kangxi 1662-1722, the well moulded with a subtle flowerhead design within an original narrow hatched border in underglaze blue, later enamelled in England c.1760-70 in the Imari manner in iron red and gilt with three Islamic-style ogee-petal panels reserved on a diamond diaper ground, alternating with a gilt figure of a European man holding a bundle on the end of a stick, the border with red and gilt floral detailing, 22.6cm.
Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 459. Purchased from Geoffrey Waters.
The pattern is a direct copy of a Japanese pattern, c.1730, illustrated on a bowl and saucer dish in Porcelain for Palaces, p.225, pl.239, where it is noted that the Derby factory copied the pattern (illustrated on p.294, pl.355). See also Teresa Canepa, Linglong, pp.160-161, no.64 for a Chinese part service decorated in England with the same pattern, and dated to the Jiaqing period (1796-1820).
