Nine Wedgwood porcelain plates early 20th century, decorated with various scenes from Surtees' Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities, illustrated by John Leach, titled beneath each scene, within gilt dentil rims, printed marks and retailer's marks for Phillips Ltd, New Bond Street, 23.5cm. (9)
Robert Smith Surtees compiled Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities in 1838 from comic illustrations which appeared in his New Sporting Magazine from 1831. The antics of the artful Cockney grocer caught the public's imagination and further books followed.
