A good Chinese scroll painting by Xu Beihong (1895-1953), of a standing horse in ink and colour on paper, inscribed and signed 'Xu Beihong, 34th Year (of the Republic)', corresponding to 1945, seal of the artist 'Dong Hai Wang Son', the scroll inscribed 'Ju Pon A mon cher ami A. Bastien souvenir affectueux, Ju Pon 1947' . Some foxing. 89cm. x 49cm. Provenance: given by Xu Beihong to the current owner's uncle, Alfred Bastien. Alfred Thodore Joseph Bastien attended the art academies of Gent and Brussels. He studied Courbet and Delacroix and was influenced by the impressionists. Bastien taught at the Brussels academy where he became Director in 1928.
