Born in Plymouth, Rouby travelled to Rome on his Grand Tour and had contact with artists such as Henry Fuseli and Alan Ramsay. He met Sir Richard Colt Hoare who was married to Hon. Hester Lyttelton, sister to the sitter in this portrait and after her death he travelled with her brother through Italy. Colt Hoare employed Rouby to produce large sepia drawings for Stourhead and it is likely that he also produced this painting during that period. After his Grand Tour, Lyttelton became an MP for Granard and Bewdley and lived at Hagley Hall in Worcester.
