Description
λA 19th century Italian carved ivory model of Bishop Gotofredo's situla, with a swing handle above an inscribed and acanthus carved frieze, with niches with figures of the four Evangelists and the Virgin and child, flanked by two angels, 19.5cm high, 12.3cm wide.
Provenance: Sotheby's New York , 30th May 1980, Lot 196. Sotheby's Amsterdam, 23rd May 2000, Lot 193.
The original situla was commissioned by Bishop Gotofredo, Archbishop of Milan, for the coronation of Otto II in 979. It now resides in the treasury of the Basilica Santa Maria Nascente, Milan.
