A RARE CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF MAITREYA

SIX CHARACTER XUANDE MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1426-35

Seated in dhyanasana and raised on a double lotus base, the hands joined before his chest, wearing draped robes and with an elaborate arrangement of jewellery, the earlobes elongated by large circular earrings, the high chignon cold painted in blue and adorned by a tall headdress, with a benevolent expression, the central urna protruding from the forehead, the baseplate engraved with a double vajra, 18.1cm.

Provenance: purchased from Spink & Son in 1966, and thence by descent.
