A PAIR OF CHINESE CORAL GROUND VASES

QING DYNASTY

Each painted to one side with Ma Gu and a deer, to the other with an extensive lakeside landscape, reserved on a bright coral ground, a four character Qianlong mark to the base, raised on a rectangular hardwood stand, 29cm. (4)

Provenance: from the collection of John Shaw (d.1947), and thence by descent. After finishing his service in the Royal Marines in 1903, John Shaw joined the Municipal Police in Shanghai where he spent twenty-five years, eventually reaching the rank of Chief Inspector.
