A CHINESE SCROLL PAINTING ON SILK BY CHENG CHICHENG

LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY

Painted with columns of calligraphy, taken from the Mao Shi (The Book of Odes), which read si yan shi xi, bin ji zui zhi, de yin kong zhao. Le zhi jun zi, yun hu bu xi, and with three red seal marks, 43cm x 40cm.

Cheng Chicheng was a painter and calligrapher, who fled China on the advent of the Manchu conquest. He spent twenty years in Nagasaki teaching both painting and calligraphy, and was considered an authority on old Chinese works of art.
