Description

A George III silver cheese dish,

by John Scofield, London 1796,

rectangular form, engraved with a crest, length 7.2cm, approx. weight 1.3oz.

Engraved with the crest and motto for Wedderburn and later augmented by the Earl's coronet for the Earldom of Rosslyn, created in 1801. Alexander Wedderburn (1773-1805) was a Scottish lawyer who entered parliament in 1761. At first for a Scottish, and then for English constituencies. His rise to distinction started as Solicitor General in 1771, creation as Baron Loughborough in 1780 and culminated in appointment as Lord Chancellor 1793-1801.
