Description

A rare Vauxhall pear-shaped vase, decorated in the atelier of James Giles, each side painted with a colourful panel of Chinese boys at play amidst foliage, the rich blue ground gilded with scrolls, flowers and leaves, marked with a 'G' in underglaze blue, c.1765. A foot section repaired. 14cm. Cf. S. Hanscombe, James Giles China and Glass Painter (1718-80), no.89 for a pair of similar vases but painted with European figures described as possibly Bow, and Simon Spero, Exhibition 1998, no.3 for a pair of related sauce boats.
