λ An Aleutian seated figure

Bering Sea, Alaska

walrus ivory, with folded arms resting on the knees with distinct facial features and with a pierced hole for attachment,

4cm high.

This type of figure is found on the wooden hunting visors of the Aleutians, and would have been attached to the visor with sinew thread through the hole in the body.

Examples can be found in the British Museum (Am.2326, 2327) and the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, St. Petersburg (MAE2668-23, 4104-2, 4104-3, 4104-4, 4104-5.)
