Description
Charles Arthur Bourgeois (French 1838-1886). A bronze figure of the 'Snake Charmer', the base signed 'A. BOURGEOIS Sculptr' and with foundry signature 'L. Marchand EDT', 82.8cm high.
Charles Bourgeois created and exhibited the plaster version of the Snake Charmer in 1863 the same year that he won the Prix de Rome. In 1864 Emperor Napoleon III ordered a life-size bronze of the Snake Charmer which now stands in the Jardin des Plantes, Paris.
