Description

A late 19th century American novelty vesta case,

Pat. Oct 1. 90,

modelled as a rolled up copy of 'The Scientific American', with a sleeve and enamelled stamp and with an enamelled post mark for 'New York 2pm 10 90', length 6cm.

Provenance: purchased at Christie's, South Kensington, Vesta Cases, Tuesday 15 September 1998, lot 17.

The Scientific American was founded by Rufus M. Porter, inventor and publisher in 1845. However, the last edition was published in 1890, which may have resulted in this commemorative vesta being produced.
