Description

A George IV silver Sea-Coal Meter badge,

unmarked circa 1824, the ring attachment with maker's mark AD,

shaped form, foliate scroll decoration, with an armorial, the reverse inscribed 'James Jacks Deputy Sea Coal Meter, elected 20th Feb 1824', with a ring attachment, length 8.2cm, approx. weight 1.6oz.

The armorial bears the symbols of a three-masted collier, two cauldrons, a balance and an imperial crown above the shield of the City of London. It is believed to be the authorized insignia of an early 19th century City of London Sea-coal meter.
