Description

A MASSIVE PAIR OF INDIAN SILVER AND COPPER GUJARAT-STYLE BOWLS

LATE 19TH CENTURY

The exterior decorated with floral friezes and Hindu gods and dancers in arcades, the interior with a stylized lotus flower and an engraved 'S' to the side, 41cm. (2)

Such bowls were colonial export products for the British market. The decoration resembling a temple frieze with rows of figures is similar in style to so called 'swami silver' inspired by the architectural motives of the southern Indian temples.
