Description
A 17th century Italian carved walnut cabinet, the detachable top above a pair of frieze drawers, flanked by lappeted volutes, to a pair of panel doors each carved, three mounds, a crucifix and olive branches within strapwork and leafage, flanked by terms and enclosing a shelf, the gadroon and leaf carved base on paw feet, 42.5in (108cm) h, 52in (132cm) w, 24in (61cm) d. Restoration. A paper label inside on door stating 'bought in 1858 from the convent of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a famous old Tuscan convent, near Siena...brought from Florence by J.D.Irven, in 1877. The carving to the doors is the crest for the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
