Description

A 19th century Austro-Hungarian gilded electro-type cup and cover,

by Hass, Vienna circa 1870,

the cup is a copy of a 16th century German standing cup and cover, the rock crystal bowl with figural strap supports, the pull-off cover with a detachable figural finial, on a raised stem with an agate knop, on a raised mounted circular rock crystal base, height 50cm.

In the 1870's C. Haas, of Vienna made electro-type reproductions of works of art for sale to Museums and art colleges around the world. They also supplied the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna with reproductions for sale in its shop. The Victorian and Albert Museum have an identical copy of this cup which they purchased in 1871 for £20.
