Margaret Sarah Carpenter was born in Salisbury in 1793, she went to London in 1814 and soon established herself as a leading and fashionable portrait painter. Her pictures were greatly influenced by the works of Sir Thomas Lawrence suggesting she may have been one of his pupils. The inscribed date may have been Henrietta's birthday.
