Description

λ A William IV ebony and brass mounted inkstand by Leuchars, decorated with cut brass boulle-style marquetry, the top with a pair of dished pen trays, a pair of cut glass inkwells and a central lidded compartment with an ivory handle and a scroll and stylised dolphin decorated carrying handle, the base with a stationery drawer, with a printed trade label inscribed 'LEUCHARS, Manufacturer 38, PICCADILLY', on machine turned bun feet, 19.2cm high, 34.6cm wide, 26.7cm deep.

James Leuchars established the business in 1794. Initially based at 47 Piccadilly the firm moved to 38 Piccadilly in 1820 just before James' death. The firm specialised in high quality dressing cases and desk items. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862. The firm was eventually sold to Asprey in 1888.
