Description
A Worcester blue and white water bottle or guglet and basin c.1760-65, each painted with the Willow Bridge Fisherman pattern, a figure traversing an arched bridge with two further figures fishing from a sampan beneath, the reverse with a figure and a bird beside a small pagoda beneath pine, the pattern combined to the well of the bowl, open crescent mark and script W mark, the bowl broken and repaired, 27.8cm. (2)
Provenance: the John Pinnick Collection. The guglet with a paper label for the Zorka Hodgson Collection.
The term 'guglet' is believed to derive from the sound made by liquid pouring out of the wide neck of such shaped bottles, though in fact the flared neck of this bottle is less common at Worcester than the narrow truncated opening on similar bottles.
