A very fine micromosaic plaque depicting a spaniel, the realistically represented spaniel standing in a field with hilly landscape beyond, fluffy clouds to the blue sky, signed lower left L.M. for Luigi Moglia, mounted on copper with metal rectangular frame, the micromosaic 6.5 x 4.3cm

Luigi Cavaliere Moglia (c.1813-1878) was one of the most esteemed mosaic artists of all time. In 1851 he won a gold medal at the 'Great Exhibition' of London for his micromosaic The Ruins of Paestum. Amongst his best known works are Spaniel after Aguatti and Flight to Egypt. Moglia's works can be seen in the Royal Collection Trust, Cincinnati Museum of Art and the Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
