Description

A Bow figure of a Centurion c.1760-65, possibly Epona, dressed in Roman attire before a recumbent horse, one hand resting on a shield, the other holding a sword aloft, raised on a rococo scroll base, red anchor and dagger mark, some restoration to the helmet, 20.5cm.

In Gallo-Roman religion, Epona was a protector of horses, donkeys, and mules. She was particularly a goddess of fertility, as shown by her attributes of a patera, cornucopia, ears of grain and the presence of foals in some sculptures.
