Description

A pair of Chelsea butter coolers c.1755-60, of oval form with coopered moulding, pierced to the sides and base with rows of small circular holes and painted with small flower sprays, each raised on four paw feet, 13.5cm across. (2)

Butter coolers were designed to allow condensation to drain from the butter, which formed owing to the change in temperature when it was brought into the dining room from the scullery.
