Description

λ A 19th century American laminated rosewood nursing chair in the manner of John Belter, with a scroll and pierced curved back above a stuffed-over seat, on cabriole front legs and brass castors.
John Henry Belter (1804-1863) was born in Germany and trained as a cabinet maker's apprentice in Württemberg, specialising in Rococo carving. He moved to New York City in 1833. He is most well known for developing a technique of processing laminated rosewood in many layers to achieve thin panels, that once shaped by moulds, were finely carved.
