Description

A Neoclassical white chalcedony intaglio, the oval-shaped agate plaque depicting 'Polyphemus the Cyclop, enamoured of Galatea, arranging his hair and looking at himself in the sea, which serves him as a mirror' also engraved with a pseudo signature for Kromos the ancient engraver, set within a metal frame, 4.5cm wide
Provenance: From the collection of Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754 - 1833) ; offered at auction at Christie's London 29 April - 21 May 1839, withdrawn from the sale, purchased by John Tyrrell (35 Craven Street, London) Later in the collection of Charles Scarisbrick; offered at auction by Christie's London 16May 1861 Lot 181
