A Neoclassical chalcedony intaglio, the oval pale chalcedony plaque engraved with a scene depicting 'Ulysses pouring out wine to Polyphemus', engraved with a pseudo signature for the ancient engraver Kromos, mounted within a simple yellow gold frame, 4.5cm wide

Provenance: From the collection of Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754 - 1833); offered at auction by Christie's London 29 April - 21st May 1839, lot 245, withdrawn from the sale, purchased by John Tyrrell (35 Craven Street, London); part of the group of gems pawned for 17,000 pounds to Frederick John, 5th Baron Monson (1809-1841), inherited by his estate; offered at auction by Christie's London 9th June 1851, lot 86.
