Description

A Neoclassical sard intaglio, the oval-shaped sard plaque engraved with a scene depicting 'Telemachus interceding for Phemius', with a pseudo-signature (pretending to be the work of the ancient engraver Apollonides), set within a simple yellow gold brooch mount, 3.5cm wide

Provenance: From the collection of Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754-1833); supposedly offered for auction at Christie's (London), 29 April - 21 May 1839, withdrawn from the sale, purchased by John Tyrrell (35 Craven Street - London).
