A RARE CHINESE GILT-WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI

MING DYNASTY

Seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base with his right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and his left in dhyana mudra, dressed in monk's robes partially draped over his left shoulder, his eyes closed in a focused expression, his head lined with tight curls, 22.5cm.

Provenance: from the collection of Sir Framjee Dinshaw Maneckji Petit, 3rd Baronet (1901-1983) and Lady Sylla Dinshaw Petit (née Tata), purchased from John Sparks London, 2nd October 1957 for £45, a copy of the original invoice is available.
