Description

A RARE CHINESE 'SWATOW' 'HARE' DISH

17TH CENTURY

Painted to the centre with a roundel containing a hare on an iron-red ground, with further eight roundels, stylised flowerheads and tassels to the cavetto, the reverse with three freely painted flaming sacred jewels, 36cm.

Cf. J Welsh, Zhangzhou Export Ceramics, The so-called Swatow Wares, pp.180-181 for a similar dish with an elephant, although no comparable with a hare appears to be known.
