Description

A JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE

MEIJI 1868-1912

Carved as an artist kneeling next to his sculpture of a beauty, the tools of his craft laid before him and with sagemono underneath his knees, the bijin with her obi belt tied before her thus suggesting she may be a courtesan, signed Munenari, 5.9cm.

The himotoshi is situated at the back of the beauty's obi, in effect making this a netsuke of a netsuke.
