Description
A KOREAN LACQUERED WOOD CHEST, BANDAJI
CHOSON DYNASTY
The top half with seven drawers surrounding a small storage area with two hinged doors, the lower half with a drop-front door opening on a larger storage area, decorated with mother of pearl, tortoiseshell, shagreen and inlaid brass wires with four confronting phoenix, stylised clouds, flowerheads and trigrams, the corners and hinges with ornate brass mounts, all raised on a stand with similar decoration, 114cm x 91cm x 35.5cm. See the Metropolitan Museum of Art, acc. n. 63.121.1a,b, for a comparable chest bequeathed by Franklin Jasper Walls and described as possibly the property of a Korean noble woman. Also, see Bonhams San Francisco, 25th June 2014, lot 6051 for a storage chest with similar decoration.
