A RARE JAPANESE KARATSU FOOTED DISH
LATE MOMOYAMA/EARLY EDO
The body with a shallow well and the rim pinched in four corners, the surface with a light crazing and a creamy glaze, delicately painted with three sprays of millet, one with a broken leaf, with old kintsugi gold lacquer restoration to the rim, raised on a short unglazed foot, 19.7cm.
Cf. S Jenyns, Japanese Pottery, n.73b, for another Karatsu dish with a similar pattern of reeds. Also, see T Nakazato, Famous Ceramics of Japan, Karatsu, p. 31 no.44, and p.42 for a study of the same dish, located in the Umezawa Memorial Gallery.
