A LARGE JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE

MEIJI 1868-1912

The bulbous body decorated with a continuous scene of many figures in a mountainous river landscape, with thatched buildings, a four -storey pagoda and a shrine amongst the luxuriant vegetation, a red wood bridge crossing a stream to one side with Mount Fuji in the background, the details painted with an abundance of gilt and many trees with pink foliage, the shoulder with a band of stylised flowerheads and scrolling tendrils on a dark green ground, the foot with further bands of scrolling patterns and geometrical designs, the base with a three character signature for Zenkozan in gilt on a black rectangular reserve, with the Shimazu mon above, 22.5cm.
