Description

A NEPALESE CAST COPPER SCULPTURE OF A KNEELING COUPLE AT PRAYER

19TH CENTURY

A lay man and woman, dressed in their finery and wearing traditional Nepali jewellery, sit side by side in prayer on a rectangular lotus throne, an oil lamp fashioned as a lotus flower is placed in front of them, the reverse with a long Newari inscription, 14cm, 960g.

Images of this type were designed to be permanently positioned in front of a shrine, so that the donors would be permanently presented at prayer.
