A GANDHARAN TERRACOTTA HEAD OF BUDDHA

3RD-5TH CENTURY AD

The face finely rendered with well-defined features and a meditative expression, his downcast eyes set beneath arched eyebrows, he wears an elaborate crown decorated with serpent-like beasts, flowers and jewels, with wavy locks flowing from beneath the headpiece, the surface with traces of red and black pigment, all raised on a modern stand, 28cm. (2)

Provenance: from a Belgian private collection, purchased from Joseph Gerena, New York, in 2004.
