A JAPANESE MATCHLOCK CARBINE
EDO PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
With an iron octagonal-section barrel, the wood stock decorated with flowering branches of prunus and further sakura flowers, chrysanthemum flowerheads, two leaping rabbits, a kabuto helmet and a ferocious-looking shishi, the barrel signed underneath Sesshu ju Igawa Yosabei (made by Igawa Yosabei of Settsu Province), 133.5cm.
