Description
A mid-19th century Irish sycamore and ash primitive armchair in the manner of Gibson, with a comb top rail and a stick back, the curved arms interlocking with the outer back upright, with traces of original paint.
This type of Irish country chair is known as a 'Gibson chair' and the design was most common in Northeastern Leinster. They are characterised by the 'W' shape back spindles and the interlocking arms. See Claudia Kinmonth, Irish Country Furniture 1700-1950, p. 39, pl.37 for a similar example.
