The large monument on the column was sculpted by Rombout Verhulst (1624-1698) in honour of Pieter Adriaansz. van der Werff (1529-1604). Van der Werff was the Burgomaster of Leiden during the siege of that city by the Spanish in 1574, and famously offered up his own body as food for his people. The monument provides a terminus post quem of 1661 for the present work.
