A PAIR OF RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL GREEN AND YELLOW-ENAMELLED 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' BOWLS
SIX CHARACTER KANGXI MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD 1662-1722
Each incised and decorated in green enamel with two dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls above phoenix medallions, all reserved on a yellow ground, with roundels enclosing stylised shou characters and clouds to the wells, 15cm. (2)
Provenance: from an English private collection.
Cf. Christie's Hong Kong, 1st June 2011, lot 3510 for another bowl with this design; see also The Tsui Museum of Art: Chinese Ceramics IV, no.111 for a further example. It is recorded that bowls with this design were made for guifei, the highest-ranking imperial concubines, or fei, imperial concubines.
