Signed, dated and inscribed on the counter-enamel in red paint Inscribed on the reverse Prince of Orange./ Painted by Henry Pierce Bone/ after Frank Hals, May 1853

Enamel on copper, oval, in a giltwood frame with scroll and foliate decoration

Although the inscription on the reverse identifies the sitter as William II, Prince of Orange (1626-1650), the painting is based on a work of an unknown boy by Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, today in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, (inv. no. 2483).
