The identification of the sitter as Anne of Cleves comes from an inscription on the original painting at Althorp, Northamptonshire, then thought to have been painted by Bernard van Orley (c.1488-1541/2). Henry Pierce Bone painted another version of this work for Queen Victoria in 1843 (Royal Collection no. RCIN 421709).
