A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD ARMCHAIRS

ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCOIS HERVE, C.1790

each with an oval padded back within a guilloche carved frame and an urn cresting, upholstered with black watered silk, the arm supports carved with leaves and husks, above a serpentine front seat, with a flowerhead and fluted tablet, on stiff leaf and stop-fluted tapering front legs, re-gilt and restored (2)

Catalogue note

For a set of twelve chairs of a very similar design made for the 2nd Earl of Spencer (1758-1834), see Christie's, The Spencer House Sale, 8th July 2010, lot 1052 which fetched £49,250 (including fees). Also, a related suite of furniture was commissioned in 1782 by the 2nd Earl Spencer's sister, Georgiana, and her husband William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (d. 1811) for Chatsworth, Derbyshire, see I.
