Description
A Copeland plate from the wedding service of Albert Edward Prince of Wales c.1863, of 'Festoon Embossed' shape, the rim painted by Charles Ferdinand Hürten with four panels of fruit and flowers, the well with monogrammed initials for Edward and Alexandra, and a Copeland commemorative plate painted with the arms of the Prince of Wales and the City of London within a pierced and elaborately gilded rim, printed marks, the wedding plate broken and riveted, 22.7cm max. (2)
Provenance: Alfred Gresham Copeland, Robert Copeland (1925-2010), and thence by descent.
The first service was ordered by the Prince of Wales to celebrate his marriage to Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863. The second service was produced shortly afterward to commemorate his being given the Freedom of the City of London.
