Description

A RARE LATE GEORGE II MAHOGANY BUREAU
IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, C.1760
in two sections, veneered overall in flame figured mahogany, with a brass escutcheon with a push button mechanism to lift the keyhole cover, the escutcheon plate engraved with a lion and coronet crest above a coat of arms and the motto 'Virtute Non Vi' for the Newdich (Newdick) family of Worcestershire (arms granted in 1580), the hinged fall revealing a fitted interior inlaid with parquetry banding, with curved and stepped mahogany lined drawers and pigeonholes, one drawer fitted for pens and ink and hiding a secret drawer behind, the fall with a baize lined writing surface, above a baize lined brushing slide and three banks of four graduated drawers which pull out as one, possibly for travelling, fitted with bronze handles, each side with two bronze handles for carrying, on later wooden castors
