Description

A FRENCH BRONZE FIGURE OF NARCISSUS

AFTER BARTHÉLEMY PRIEUR (FRENCH 1536-1611), LATE 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY

the naked youth with a fig leaf hiding his modesty, later mounted on a Sicilian jasper socle

22.7cm high (Narcissus), 31.5cm high (overall)

Catalogue Note

It is believed that Prieur's original Narcissus was directly inspired by the Dying Slave by Michelangelo for the unfinished tomb of Pope Julius II, which was brought to France and presented to King François I in 1546.
