A family group of three British Army commissions (commissioning parchments): George III, 1792, William Godley, Lieutenant in the 41st Regiment of Foot, bearing autograph signatures of King George III and of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville; Victoria, 1854, Henry Robert Crew Godley, Captain in the 28th Regiment of Foot, bearing autograph signatures of Queen Victoria and of Viscount Palmerston; George V, 1915, Gerald Annesley George Godley, 2nd Lieutenant in the Land Forces (Army Service Corps), bearing autograph signature of King George V.
H.R.C. Godley was born c. 1828. He served in the Crimean War and was severely wounded in the 1st attack on the Redan.
G.A.G. Godley was born in 1897, the son of Major Harry Crewe Godley DSO, and Grandson of the abovementioned Henry Robert Crewe. He was killed in France, 26th March 1918. According to an obituary he was the victim of "a bomb dropped by an English aeroplane flew by a German"
